Start with a small collection of words you have actually encountered. Add a clear definition and a sentence you understand. A personal note can preserve why you wanted to learn the word in the first place.
What you can put in a personal word entry
A custom word in Neologics has a word and definition, a part of speech, and space for an example and a personal note. You can edit an existing custom entry when you find a clearer explanation or a more useful example.
A personal entry does not need to reproduce an entire dictionary page. Capture the sense you encountered and enough context to distinguish it from related words. If a word has several meanings, make the meaning you intend to practice explicit.

An example: a word from a work conversation
Suppose someone describes an explanation as lucid. You could write: “Clear and easy to understand.” For an example, try: “Her lucid explanation helped the team agree on the next step.” A personal note might be: “Useful when giving feedback on a presentation.”
That entry connects a meaning with a situation. Later, you can cover the word and ask which adjective describes the explanation. You can also write a new sentence so that the original example does not become the only context in which you recognize it.
Keep collection and practice connected
Adding a word can feel like finishing a task, but the entry is a starting point. Bring personal vocabulary into your learning routine and return to it after a break. Try recalling the meaning before rereading the definition.
Keep the list small enough that you can revisit it. If you repeatedly avoid an entry, its definition may be unclear, the example may be unhelpful, or the word may simply not matter to you right now. Improve the entry or choose a more relevant word.
- Capture a word soon after you encounter it.
- Write an example you can explain in your own words.
- Return for practice rather than collecting indefinitely.
- Edit confusing entries when review reveals a problem.
