What spaced repetition means for vocabulary

Spaced repetition means returning to material across separate sessions instead of putting all the repetitions into one sitting. An app can help by keeping track of words and scheduling another review. That schedule is a tool for practice, not a guarantee that you will remember every word.

Give yourself a chance to recall the answer

Before revealing a definition, pause and try to explain the word. If the prompt asks for a missing word, think of the answer before looking for a clue. An honest attempt tells you more about what needs work than immediately rereading the explanation.

Neologics includes practice questions with feedback. Use an incorrect answer to inspect the distinction you missed. Perhaps two words have similar meanings but different tones, or perhaps the example did not make the intended sense clear.

Recognizing a word and using it are different tasks

You might recognize an adjective in an article but struggle to produce it in conversation. Practice both directions: explain a word when you see it, and retrieve a word when you are given a meaning or situation.

Then write an original sentence. For lucid, a definition such as “clear and easy to understand” is useful, but writing about a lucid explanation connects it to an actual use. Check that your sentence shows the intended meaning rather than simply containing the word.

A small review routine to try

Start with a manageable amount of vocabulary. Return to words already in your practice before adding a large batch of new ones. The aim is a routine that leaves time to understand mistakes.

1. Attempt the review prompt before revealing help.
2. Read the feedback and identify what was unclear.
3. Revisit the definition, example, or personal note.
4. Use the word in a new sentence when you can.
5. Come back for later practice and adjust the amount of new material to fit your time.

What to do after missing a few days

Resume with a small session. Some words will feel familiar and others will need another look. Treat the response as information about the next practice session, rather than trying to make up for every missed day at once.

If a word remains confusing, change the way you understand it: find a clearer example, compare it with a word you know, or add personal context. Repeating an explanation that does not make sense is unlikely to solve the problem by itself.
