Vocabulary games for adults

Try a definition match, a sentence gap or a synonym quiz. Each exercise includes answers and examples so you can check the words you missed. You’ll also find Neologics games that practise the same skills.

Use eight slips of paper for the definition match. You can answer the sentence-gap and synonym exercises aloud or write your answers down.

We make Neologics. The exercises on this page are original examples, and the game descriptions reflect the app details we checked on October 26, 2026.

Exercise 1: match words to meanings

Write these four words on separate slips: candid, meticulous, tentative, lucid. On another four slips, write: clear and easy to understand; careful about details; honest and direct; not yet definite or certain. Mix each set, then pair every word with a meaning.

The pairs are candid with honest and direct; meticulous with careful about details; tentative with not yet definite or certain; and lucid with clear and easy to understand. Read one pair aloud and make an example that shows the meaning: “We have a tentative date, but the venue hasn’t confirmed it.”

For another round, put away the word slips. Look at one meaning and try to name the word. If your clue could describe several words, accept another suitable answer or make the clue more specific.

Exercise 2: fill a sentence gap

Complete this sentence with lucid, opaque, or erratic: “The instructions were so ___ that even a first-time visitor could follow them without help.” Lucid fits because the instructions are clear. Opaque means hard to understand; erratic means irregular or unpredictable.

Now try: “The proposal is still ___; we may change the date after speaking with the venue.” Choose between tentative, candid, and meticulous. Tentative fits the uncertainty. The other choices describe directness and care with details, which do not explain why the date might change.

To make your own round, write a sentence around a word you recently met and remove that word. Include enough context to point to its meaning. Ask another person to try it, or return to the prompt later. If several answers work, discuss what each one means in the sentence.

Exercise 3: choose a synonym

Choose the word closest to candid: frank, guarded, or vague. Frank is the closest in the sense of speaking honestly and directly. Put the pair into a sentence: “She gave a candid account of what went wrong.” A frank account keeps that meaning; a guarded account suggests holding something back.

Candid describes honesty, while lucid describes clearness. “A candid account” and “a lucid explanation” can both describe speech, but they say different things about it. Try a synonym in the whole sentence to check that it keeps the meaning you intend.

Vocabulary game modes in Neologics

The table describes six of the ten word games in Neologics. Choose a mode for the type of question you want to practice.

Match Rush and Speedonym have timers. Spellbound lets you work on spelling from a meaning without a timer, while What the Blank?! asks you to choose a word for a sentence gap.

Review a word after playing

After a round, look up one word you were unsure about. Read its definition and example, then write a sentence you might use. When you return to it later, try to recall the word from that sentence before looking at the answer.

Neologics also offers personal word entries and spaced-repetition practice. You can add words from your own reading. It is free to download with optional Pro access; check the current game and practice limits in the app before choosing a plan.
